Recycle Your Boat Wrap

You know that disposable shrink wrap that everyone wraps their boats in all winter?

What do you do do with yours when it's time to launch your boat in the spring?

You and boaters at your local marinas may be throwing tons of plastic away each spring.

Remember a few years ago when most boaters instead used canvas and re-usable plastic tarps, and lots of messy ropes - to accomplish the same protection from the elements in the off-season? This was not as convenient or effective as the plastic used today, but it was a heck of a lot more environmentally friendly.

I just read a story about a bunch of marinas in Westchester County, NY, that started a recycling program for this newfangled boat wrap. If you keep your boat at the city of New Rochelle marina, the city of Rye boat basin or Harbor Island Park in Mamaroneck, you'll get to participate in this pilot program.

I'd like to think this isn't the only part of the country where boaters and marinas are being environmentally conscious about their winter wraps.

If you are part of another community that is recycling your plastic boat covers, please post a comment here.
