Columbus Day Weekend is upon us, marking an historical event that was both critical to the founding of our nation and has a nautical theme. However, as a country, we seem to be celebrating Columbus less and less each year as layers of the onion of history are peeled back. Schools and federal offices are closed on Monday across the US, but most private employers are open for business as usual. And with Fleet Week, the America's Cup World Series and the sailboat show in Annapolis all happening, no matter what your opinion is of Columbus, it is a great weekend for boating.

This Weekend's Events
On the other side of the country, one of the biggest sailboat-focused shows is starting today in Annapolis - the United States Sailboat Show runs through Monday the 8th (and after a couple of day break, the US Powerboat Show runs from the 11th to the 14th on the same grounds.)
Smaller shows elsewhere in the US include the Indianapolis Fall Boat and RV Show which is being held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds this Friday through Sunday.
There are a few shows going on outside of the US this weekend as well...
Italy is where you will find the 52nd annual Genoa International Boat Show, aka Salone Nautico Internazionale, which spans four pavilions and two marinas. This large show also spans two weekends, beginning this Saturday, October 6th, and running through the 14th.
Cross a few seas and a couple of mountains, and you'll find the International Istanbul Boat Show which has been going on since last weekend and ends on Sunday the 7th.
And if you are on the opposite side of the world from us, check out the Rivergate International Boat Show in Queensland, from Friday the 5th through Sunday the 7th.
