When someone says, "let's take a meeting!", it should make you reach for your e.diary!  If they say it on the water, do as Nancy Reagan once advised - Just say NO!

As you've read here, there are only three conditions of vessels meeting on the waters - head-on, crossing or overtaking situations. The Rules govern how the skippers are to interact with each other through helm control and sound (or radio) signals. This is about overtaking another vessel - which puts you just about as low on the priority totem pole as there is...

Wouldn't it be great to find a set of easy to use exercises that could help prevent injury in small boat cruising and sailing? Few exercise programs mention the importance of maintaining wrist muscles for strength and flexibility.

Step aboard any sailboat, and you engage in gripping, pulling, lifting and twisting this joint. If you slip or trip on deck, your hands and wrists will take the full impact of the fall.

Prevent injury with simple range-of-motion exercises. Build power and flexibility to help prevent injury with these 5 wrist range-of-motion workout tips...

World Oceans Day 2012

Happy World Oceans Day. What do you do to protect the places we boat?...

World Oceans Day 2012 for Boating
World Oceans Day 2012. Photo by Nautical Sites Media.

Each year on June 8th, World Oceans Day is celebrated all over the world. In many parts of the US, such as the Northeast where we are based, World Oceans Day occurs at the beginning of the boating season. Perhaps the timing is meant to remind us that the ocean is precious to everyone, but especially to us boaters. The ocean is where we boat - where we swim - where we fish - where we live.

World Oceans Day give us boaters an opportunity to consider what we can do to keep our oceans sustainable for ourselves and future generations...

Crowded river with boats

While many readers of the Daily Boater will head out to the Canyons off Long Island, or to Catalina Island, California, for the great pelagics - sharks of many stripes and sizes - I feel safe in saying that the majority of our readers fish in the creeks, bays and inlets that line our shores.

Get Off The Couch - It's NFBW!

RBFF's National Fishing and Boating Week begins today...

The Recreational Boating & Fishing Foundation's (RBFF) Take Me Fishing™ campaign is encouraging families, kids and outdoor adventurers alike to experience the joys of boating and fishing right in their own backyard during National Fishing and Boating Week (NFBW), June 2 – 10, 2012.

National Fishing and Boating Week begins today and highlights the importance of recreational boating and fishing in enhancing peoples' quality of life and preserving our country's natural beauty. The week-plus long event offers boaters and anglers of all ages and skill levels a great reason to spend quality time together, enjoying and appreciating the great outdoors whether in their local community or on a vacation. This year, nearly 40 out of the 50 states are offering Free Fishing Days during NFBW, providing a chance for current participants to introduce the sport to newcomers, especially children.

According to the Outdoor Foundation, the average child spends 35 hours a week in front of the television, and less than 25 percent of school-aged children participate in some form of daily physical activity. In turn, RBFF research has shown that fishing is a top "gateway" activity, spurring involvement in other outdoor interests which may lead to an active, healthy lifestyle. "Boating and fishing are the kinds of activities that get families and kids outdoors and reconnecting with each other – and with nature," said RBFF President and CEO Frank Peterson. "With hundreds of thousands of places to boat and fish across the country, families likely have access to a boating and fishing location very close to home."

During NFBW, RBFF will be promoting its TakeMeFishing.org resources, such as the Places to Boat and Fish Map, which is featured on sites like FirstBoat.com, one of the RBFF's many industry partners. To find a place to boat or fish in your state, visit www.firstboat.com/states/fish.html

For more information about boating and fishing via the RBFF, visit www.takemefishing.org.
