If you're heading out on a charter or renting a condo for some land travel, I've got a few things that you might want to add to your packing list.

You see, charter companies all say they've got everything you need for the kitchen/galley. But my experience is that while you can get by with what's there, I'm happier if I bring along a few things so that I know I've got some basic tools that I like. Our recent trip to Hawaii, where we rented a budget condo for 12 days, reminded me of several things I'd forgotten.  (continues after the pic...)

The Boat Galley: More Privacy

This week's Boat Galley article shares an environmentally smart trick for having more privacy on your boat...

Ever wish your port holes had frosted glass? I mean, cruisers are a friendly bunch and most try to respect each others' privacy even when docked just a few feet away. However, sometimes it just ends up that someone has a pretty good view right into the boat either from the dock or, more frequently, from their boat into yours. And if it happens to be your "dressing area" or it's hot and you're not wearing much, well, you just crave a bit of privacy. (continues after the pic...)

Miami and Moore

This weekend's events include the huge Miami Boat Show, boat shows in Boston and Detroit, and an appearance by Charlie Moore at the Northeast Fishing Show...

If bad weather got in the way of your plans to go to a boating or fishing show last weekend, you've got plenty of chances to make up for it this weekend. Of course if you happen to be down that way there's the Miami Boat Show, one of the world's biggest industry events. And up in our home state of Connecticut, we've got the Northeast Fishing and Hunting Show displaying a few small to medium sized boats enough fishing gear to keep us entertained for a few hours.

Our boat show calendar has the official website address for each of this week's fishing and boat shows, and we list them all after the photo...

Whales and Wine

This video first caught our attention simply because it is brand new, high quality and features a boat. Yup, that's all it usually takes.

But after only about a minute the video got much cooler when we realized that the narrator, Australian photographer Scott Portelli, was about to swim with huge whales. It turns out the video is part of a promotion for a wine company, but that's secondary to the amazing scenes you will see. Enjoy...

By the way, if you'd like to swim with Scott Portelli and 'his' whales, visit his website at www.scottportelli.com and click on the "upcoming tours" link.

And if for some reason this video makes you want to buy a bottle of wine, wouldn't it be handy if you had a cork screw with your boat name on it?

We hope you enjoyed the video, and that you will boat responsibly when the snow melts this season.

The Boat Galley: Coffee Filters

This week's Boat Galley article discusses the pros and cons of using a permanent coffee filter on the boat...

Coffee filter
I've long thought that a "permanent" coffee filter would be a good idea on a boat. We had a few friends that used them, and they always seemed like a neat idea:

•    Anything that's designed to be re-used just seems more environmentally friendly.
•    Buy it once, rather than finding filters in out-of-the-way locations.
•    Less trash - each one is small, but yes, they do add to the trash management issue.
•    One less thing to store, since you can leave it in the coffee maker.

But are they really??

Nemo's Boat Shows

Will snow in the Northeast impact this weekend's boating and fishing shows?

As Nemo the named blizzard bears down on the Northeast, boat shows and fishing shows around the country open up this weekend anticipating better crowds and sales than the past few years.

This weekend's boat shows include Los Angeles, Vancouver, St. Louis, Charlotte and several others, but there are a few events in the Northeast that might be affected by the huge snow storm that began Friday morning. Atlantic City, Long Island, Cape Cod and Worcester are all holding boat or sport shows that you should probably call first before driving to. While the exhibitors all moved into these shows before the first flake fell, and the space is already paid for, some of the events may face forced closure by their state governments due to dangerous road conditions. Our boat show calendar has the official website address for each of this week's boat shows - definitely get in touch with your local event organizers or the facility before heading out.

First of February Boat Shows

Several boat shows around the country this weekend include Washington, Texas, New York and more...

The boat shows are finally moving out west this weekend. Other than Rochester, NY, it seems most of the boat shows in the United States this weekend are west of the Mississippi River.
